Our Mission

Countenance seeks to collaborate with artists across mediums to publish artistic expressions of original poetry that inspire authenticity and hope.

What's behind the name Countenance?

I chose the name Countenance very intentionally. I first fell in love with the word when I read Song of Solomon 2:14 which says:

"O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, in the crannies of the cliff, let me see your face, let me hear your voice, for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely."

(*Note: The word for “face” in the original Hebrew text is “mare’e” which means “countenance.”)

When I read this verse, my initial thought was “Woah, the crannies of the cliff? That sounds like a really tight, uncomfortable, claustrophobic, and painful place to be.” I pictured jagged rocks poking into my skin and only hurting more whenever I tried to move.

What my heart needed to hear, though, was that it was exactly there that Jesus was inviting me to look directly at Him, beholding His countenance and showing Him mine

In that moment, I knew that I needed to talk to Jesus amidst my difficulties and amidst the situations in which I felt like there was no way out.

Even my tear-stained face was beautiful to Him. And even if my voice was weak, afraid, or uncertain, He wanted to hear it nonetheless.

I’ve wrestled with Him, turned my face toward Him as I wept uncontrollably, and have come to know His love in a way that I could have never before imagined.

My hope and prayer is that hearing more about my journey and reading what I said to God during those times will give you language of your own to come to Him honestly and vulnerably

He wants to see your face and hear your voice.

He wants to behold your countenance and invites you to gaze upon His
